When the first shot is given, how often it is repeated, and what to do before vaccination.
In its first weeks a puppy is protected by immunity passed on in its mother's milk, but that protection fades at around 6–8 weeks. This is why the first combination vaccine is usually given at 6–8 weeks.
The second dose follows 3–4 weeks later, and the third another 3–4 weeks after that, at roughly 16 weeks. The rabies vaccine is most often given after 12 weeks and is the only one required by law. After that, shots are repeated once a year.
Parasite treatment should be done 10–14 days before the vaccination. Intestinal parasites weaken the immune response, so this step should not be skipped. On the day itself the animal must be fully healthy: fever, diarrhoea or a cough means postponing.
After each procedure the vet stamps the international passport and writes the date. You will need this document for boarding, border crossings and airlines — keep it safe and store a photo on your phone.
Mild tiredness for a day or two after a shot is normal. Swelling, severe weakness or laboured breathing means going to the clinic immediately.
