When does a pet need grooming, and how often?

Brushing and clipping intervals by coat type, plus practical rules for nails and ears.

How often grooming is needed depends on the coat. Short-haired breeds do fine with brushing once a week. Long-haired cats and dogs need brushing almost daily — otherwise the coat mats, and mats have to be cut close to the skin.

A full clip is usually done every 6–8 weeks. Breeds with continuously growing coats — poodles, bichons, Yorkshire terriers — may need it sooner. Shaving an animal down before summer is not always right: in some breeds the coat protects against sun and overheating.

Nails are trimmed roughly every 3–4 weeks. Overgrown nails change the way an animal walks and put strain on the joints. Avoid the pink quick when cutting — if unsure, take a little off more often.

Check ears once a month. Breeds with drop ears (cocker spaniels, bassets) have less airflow and a higher risk of infection. Dark discharge, a bad smell or frequent head-shaking means a trip to the vet.

For a first grooming visit, choose a short, simple session. A good first experience makes every visit after it much easier.
